Kubrick’s latest
Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket,” a film about the Vietnam War, will open at the Regent on Friday. This is Kubrick’s latest film, and tells the story of a squad of Marine "grunts” (foot soldiers) fighting the battle of Hue City — the climactic battle of the 1968 Tet Offensive, and the turning point of the Vietnam War. Kubrick is an awardwinning director who has made such controversial films as “Clockwork Orange,” "2001: A Space Odyssey,” "Lolita,” “Dr
Strangelove — Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” and “The Shining.” He both directed and produced "Full Metal Jacket,” and wrote the screenplay with Michael Herr and Gustav Hasford. It is based on Hasford’s novel “The Short Timers.” Dorian Harewood stars as Eightball, a Marine squad member involved in a mop-up action in the war-torn Hue City. Harewood has appeared in numerous television and theatrical roles, but is best known for his roles
in “Roots: The Next Generations” and "The Jesse Owens Story.” Lee Ermey who plays Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is no stranger to the role, as he was a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps before he was med-ically-retired due to injuries. Ermey was originally taken on to the Kubrick film as a technical adviser, but he so impressed the director with, the way he confronted people, that he was taken on as a cast member.
