College seeks promotion
Lincoln College should promote itself as a national institution, offering courses of national importance, says the college principal, Professor Bruce Ross. Professor Ross told a College Council meeting this week that a wide range of career options was open to Lincoln students, including commerce, science and agriculture. Council members were discussing present and ■ future policies for the college. The college liaison officer, Mr Ron Hickford, presented a written report, after discussions with many council members. Mr Hickford said many council members saw the need for structured evaluation of the college and its courses, and market research on potential students and their requirements. With secondary school rolls falling, Lincoln College like all tertiary institutions would have to attract students from a smaller total. Any moves to attract students must not “incur the wrath” of sister universities, the report said. Television time should be sought on programmes such as “Country Calendar” to demonstrate col-
lege projects. Parks and recreation management and perhaps the new landscape architecture could be areas of real growth, but only if teaching resources were expanded. New vocational areas must be catered for in course structures, said the report
The applied commerce degrees, such as B.Comm. (horticulture) could also be promoted, especially now that other universities were having to restrict entries to commerce courses. School careers advisers and administrators could be invited to the college to learn more about courses. Liaison officers were not always getting the right audiences in schools, said Mr Hickford. Secondary school science teaching was not being taught as a “living” subject.
Within the college, council members said, the college was dominated by "white maleness” and there was a lack of balance between culture, recreation and study. The bicultural image of Lincoln should be increased, perhaps with a campus marae and Maori academic staff and council members.
