Ruling takes wind out of Armit’s sails
NZPA-AAP Pusan, South Korea In a shock announcement yesterday, eight competitors in the Finn class of the Olympic practice regatta off Rwan were declared premature starters. They included the previous fleet leader, Leith Armlt, of New Zealand, and the Australians, Chris Pratt and Campbell Rose.
Although the individual recall flag was hoisted at the start, race officials told competitors later that there were no premature starters and official results were posted. However, after a meeting of the International Jury an hour later a new result sheet for the Finn class was posted, listing eight competitors in this single-handed dinghy as
breaking the line before the gun. The worst-hit were Armit, who had been the top point-scorer after two races, and the Dane, Stig Westergaard, who had been second.
