Drivers’ award briefings
The drivers’ award talks will resume in Wellington on October 5, and during the next fortnight the president of the Road Transport Division of the Distribution Workers’ Federation will explain the claims to federation members, ’ said Mr Paul Kimble, national secretary of the federation, yesterday. The president, Mr Jackson Smith, would address the first meeting in Dunedin this morning, Mr Kimble said. Mr Kimble predicted that the members would need little encouragement to back the claim for $8 an hour, and said a gross weekly wage of $320 was extremely reasonable for the highly skilled and stressful task of truckdriving. Members previously worked long over-time hours to supplement pay but that had been cut by the recent introduction of log books for drivers.
