Imports force toilet paper price down

Consumers are benefiting from a toilet paper price war between two New Zealand manufacturers and a Wellington importer. Caxton Printing Works, Ltd, dropped the price of its Purex brand by another 5 per cent this week in response to the introduction bf the Orchid brand of toilet paper from Malaysia and also to Dunedin Plypac Industries “Extra" brand. Both the Purex and Orchid four-packs were available for as low as $2.49 in Christchurch supermarkets this week.

One supermarket chain, which does nob stock the Orchid brand, specialing Purex fours* for $2.29. The sales manager for G.U.S. Wholesalers, Mr Brian O’Callaghan, said that since the Orchid toilet paper was introduced here a month ago, it had sold very well, and seemed to have had some effect on Purex sales. Caxton’s decision to slash the price of its product had only taken effect from Monday, so it might not yet be fully reflected on the shelves.
