Cardiac unit delayed

The Southern Cross Medical Care Society has delayed plans to establish a cardiac by-pass unit at its Bealey Avenue hospital. The society’s general manager, Mr David Turner, confirmed yesterday in Auckland that the plans for the new unit depended on the findings of the Canterbury Hospital Board’s heart surgery unit logistics study — the report commissioned from Green 'Lane Hospital’s cardiac surgeon, Mr Allan Kerr.

The study is expected in about a month. .

The society had said that its unit would be based on its own feasibility studies, but since then it had taken part in Mr Kerr’s studies. Although the report would concentrate on the public health sector, the private sector would also be affected by its findings, Mr Turner said. , “We are now waiting for the report. It seems sensible to study and digest its findings before proceeding.”
