Poetic Prince at Waverley today

Special correspondent Wellington The presence of Poetic Prince, so far the country’s leading three-year-old, will be the highlight of the Waverley spring meeting today. And while it may be something of a surprise to see Poetic Prince lining up in the Clarendon Hotel Handicap, the added presence of other good three-year-olds like Touch of Silver, Lockins and Shampooed Twice should make for a contest full of interest The Waverley race is modest by current standards. It carries a stake of only $4600, but at set weights it is ideal for a promising young horse which after winning the Clark Trophy at Foxton and then the Cambridge Breeders Stakes, is set to head for Melbourne for three big events, the $300,000 Caulfield Guineas (1600 m on October 10, the SIM Cox Plate (2040 m on October 24 and the $600,000 VRC Derby (2500 m at Flemington on October 31. Only twice in seven starts has Poetic Prince failed to win. Once was at Ellerslie and the other at Eagle Farm. He was third at Ellerslie and at Eagle Farm and both those defeats were on right-handed tracks. won her first race at Woodville, then ran second, at New Plymouth and was hardly disgraced when fifth in the Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni, for which she was the favourite. Her trainer, Margaret Bull, won this race last year with Margarella and Touch of Silver’s work suggests she will run well fresh. Lockins has faced Poetic Prince before this season.. At Foxton he closed quickly to get third, but then failed to flatter when 10th of 12 in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes. Shampooed Twice has won twice this season and in her most recent outing scored most impressively at Wanganui three weeks ago. • ' The filly won a maiden at Hastings and before her win was second to Lockins. The double races will be run in the class 2 events, the $BOOO Waverley Cup (2175 m and the $4600 Brewer Handicap (1200 m The outcome of the first leg looks wide open, with Knight Juan, a winner at New Plymouth, Lunar Trail and Marwitzer a likely trio. Moondip, which has not raced since a weight-for-age win at Feilding, appeals as a fresh runner in the Brewer. Handicap. She is trained by Chris McNab and will be ridden by Harris, an in-form combination these days. Strike Regal has good form too, while Zarancy, along with Hayleen and Phareef, could go well fresh.
