Purdon runners favoured for Auckland double

Special correspondent Auckland Roy and Barry Purdon have a fine chance of training the winners of the T.A.B. double races on the third night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park this evening.

The Clevedon partnership has the fine three-year-old, National Image, engaged in the first leg, the Motor Corp Grand Final, and two runners — Luxury Liner and Comedy Lad — in the second, the Metropolitan Life Pace. National Image, a colt by Vance Hanover from Signifcant, faces a tough assignment. He is opposed by an extremely talented field of three and four-year-olds, notably Break The Ice, Nosirrah and Brunswick. After being off scene for some eight months through injury, National Image resumed racing on a high note in the second heat of the series. Break The Ice, Nosirrah and Brunswick were no less impressive when winning their respective heats and, with Bold Sharvid, which scored decisively on the second night last Saturday, also entered, the field contains more than one capable of testing National Image. There promises to be a keen battle for the early lead with National Image, Bold Sharvid and Go For Broke all having exceptional speed out of the gate. Jetbet: 6

Luxury Liner, which has drawn well at No. 1, looks to have a more clear-cut advantage over his rivals. With the scratching of Michele Bromac, Late Lustre and Placid Victor, Luxury Liner will only be opposed by nine rivals. Luxury Liner did not get much chance to show his best on the second night, after being pushed from pillar to post when trying to make ground around the outer. He is sure to strip a much fitter horse this time and could lead all the way. Comedy Lad showed he has lost little of his considerable dash when he flew home late for third to Hayburner and Levendi, over 2200 metres. Now seven, Comedy Lad has a splendid record when fresh and, at the corresponding meeting last year, scored over a mile in 1:58.8, beating Luxury Liner by a length and a quarter. Rum Brydon went an honest race when a close fourth last Saturday and, from No. 1 on the second line in behind Luxury Linger could manage a place.
