Auditor swaps a possibility

NZPA Wellington Multinationals operating in New Zealand could be forced to make regular auditor swaps if an E.E.C, proposal to ensure auditor independence is passed. ’lt could become impractical for a multinational to use one auditing firm for its whole group, Arthur Young technical director, Ms Liz Hickey, said yesterday.

The move could mean other requirements for independence could be forced on New Zealand firms which were incorporated in a British group, Ms Hickey said. The E.E.C. was alsq proposing to stop auditors from providing other services to audit clients, she said. However, British auditors, she said, had opposed the proposals
