Earthquake in upper island
A sharp earthquake jolted the northern South Island yesterday morning but caused no significant damage. The earthquake was centred near Havelock, in the Marlborough Sounds, and was felt as far afield as Christchurch and Wellington. The national headquarters of Civil Defence in Wellington had no report of damage, however, apart from items falling from shelves at Canvastown, a few kilometres from Havelock. The earthquake, felt as a short, sharp jolt, was' recorded by the Seismological Observatory at magnitude five on the Richter scale, and occurred at 10.48 a.m.
