Maori land claim
Sir,—As a member of Ngaitamarawaho, a sub-tribe of Ngati Ranginui, I sympathise with my people for their bold stand in a claim, one of many, for the return or compensation for about 16,000 hectares of land in various parts of Tauranga, confiscated by bureaucrats after the Battle of Gate Pa 100 years ago. I think it would be unwise for the Tauranga City Council to proceed with its building plans until the Waitangi Tribunal’s decision. After many years as a dispossessed people, and frustrated by bureaucratic humbug, our patiis wearing thin.—Yours, J. PEARSON, l3> 1987
