Arab States to hold summit

NZPA-Reuter Tunis Arab States have announced an emergency summit on the Gulf War seven weeks from now, giving every chance of success in the meantime to United Nations* efforts to achieve a ceasefire.

Aware that the spotlight is on the United Nations, where the United States is already pressing for an international arms embargo on Iran, they have effectively delayed any sanctions of their own against Teheran. The 21-member Arab League, whose Foreign Ministers decided on Sunday to call a summit meeting in Jordan on November 8, had threatened to break diplomatic relations with Iran.

The Secretary-General, Chedli Klibi, issued the warning a month ago, when Arab League members set September 20 as a deadline for Iran to heed a United Nations Security Council ceasefire call.

Any Arab sanctions Will now be deferred to the summit. Asked about what action might be taken, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Saud al-Faisal, told reporters, “We don’t want to prejudge or take action before events happen. We don’t think that’s a very sensible way of doing things.”

Arab ranks are divided on the issue of a diplomatic break. Many States, including Syria and Algeria, are opposed to it, Arab diplomatic sources say.
