Council moves to create jobs
Employment will be the focus of a special Christchurch City Council committee. Councillors last evening decided to set up a working party on employment initiatives. Its aim will be to attract long-term employment opportunities to the city. That working party, established at the suggestion of Cr Linda Constable as a special committee, will comprise the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and Crs Vicki Buck, Ron Wright, Denis Rich and Constable.
Cr Wright called on the council to take the initiative and liaise with the community to help Christchurch industry survive. The city had lost 500 jobs last week, he said. "We have to take steps to do something about that.” He called for a meeting of industry groups, employers and members of Parliament with the council working party to plan a strategy to fight unemployment. Cr Constable said the council had to take the lead in tackling unemployment.
