Aust. improves on record closes

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed steady yesterday, improving marginally on last week’s record closes as Investors consolidated positions. Brokers said gold-related and resource stocks continued to attract support at the expense of quality industrials, which fell prey to selective profit taking throughout the session. At the close, the all ordinaries index was 0.5 points above last Friday's record close at 2305.9. The all industrials fell 6.0 to 3401.5. The all gold marker climbed 41.8 to 4133.7 and the ail resources 5.3 to 1464.9. Turnover was heavy as 168.28 million shares worth sAust4s7.9BM changed hands and rises outnumbered falls by four to three.

Gold-related and resource stocks took centre stage as investors anticipated a rise in bullion to above the 8U5460 an ounce mark.

Thirty cent jumps took heavyweights Renison and Metana to 1600 and 1550 respectively as Kidston improved 20c to 800 and Newmont 8c to 428. However, Sons of Gwalla and Central Norseman slipped 20c to 1350 and 10c to 280.
