Health vote set to drop
By
OLIVER RIDDELL,
in Wellington Spending on health is forecast to be reduced substantially during the next three years from the amount provided for 198788. The provision for the health vote for 1987-88 was $3409 million. Yet in the briefing papers from the Health Department the forecast expenditure for 1989-90 is $3256 million. This three-year forecast focuses on the department’s own functions and financial outgoings, having regard to policies and priorities, and the assessment of the resources needed to fulfil them.
Considerable adjustment had already been made to the forecast levels during the 1987-88 estimates round to reflect changes in policy and fiscal strategies, the papers said.
The $3409 million voted for 1987-88 had been well up on the $2961 million voted in 1986-87 and was considered by the department to represent a number of extraordinary factors.
