Former top news media director dies

NZPA-Reuter London Sir William Haley, who rose to prominence in the British news media as the editor of “The Times” and director of the British Broadcasting Corporation and Reuters, has died, aged 86, a spokesman for “The Times” said. Sir William became a newspaperman at the age of 18 as a junior reporter at the “Morning News” in Jersey, the channel island where he was born and died. He was appointed managing editor of the "Manchester Evening News” in 1930 and served as a

director of the British domestic Press Association and Reuters News Agency during 1939 to 1943. In 1944, Sir William became Director-General of the 8.8.
