Flemington fall for Willetts
NZPA-AAP Melbourne Top jockey, Gary Willetts, is likely to miss vital weeks of the spring racing carnival after a heavy fall at Flemington yesterday. Willetts fractured both wrists when his mount, Miss Opulent, (200-1) crashed through the running rail near the 800 m in the Kitty Hawk Handicap (1600 m Miss Opulent was runa third in the 15-horse at the time of the
fail and appeared to escape injury, despite flattening the running rail. Willetts was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where his condition was described as stable before being admitted for surgery. The spokesman said Willetts had fractured both wrists, suffered slight concussion and facial abrasions. Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the fa# to a
date to be fixed. The race was won by the Tommy Smith-trained filly, Jewel Of Night (7-1),
by a length from Planned (6-I),t with Lady Marita (13-4 fav) a half head away third.
