Detailed display of painting

More than 100 hours can go into one of Joy Moore’s paintings. The painstaking detail of her pointillist works can be seen in an exhibition of about 10 of her paintings at the Mansfield Gallery in Merivale. The Christchurch painter took up pointillism about three years ago, having tried brush painting some time ago but never really getting interested. She was attracted to the detailed style by her liking for the work of Ray Hammond and Raymond Ching, she said.

Her subjects include flowers and still lifes. “It’s always a worry — what I’m going to paint. At the moment I’m doing still lifes based on hobbies. I painted my husband’s carvings and one painting was about painting — the paintbox and so on.” Joy Moore has never had any painting lessons. Her style is self taught. She estimates that one of her smaller flower paintings takes up to 30 hours. Her larger works can take 100 or more hours.' Her Mansfield Gallery exhibition will continue until September 26.
