Honecker talks of unity

NZPA-Reuter Neunkirchen East German leader, Erich Honecker, picked apples in the garden of his old West German home on Thursday then hinted that the barbedwire border dividing the two Germanys might some day come down. Mr Honecker chose his old political stamping ground in the Saarland to hold out the prospect that the concession West Germany most seeks from its Communist neighbour could be achieved.

He surprised a reception of old friends and local politicians in nearby Neunkirchen by saying in a short speech: “I believe that if we work together in the spirit of the communique agreed in Bonn ... the day will come when borders no longer divide us but unite us, as the border between the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and Poland unites.”
