Lee quits in disgust

PA Hamilton New Zealand’s top women’s table tennis player of the last few years, Christine Lee of Hamilton, has quit the sport in disgust at administration and selection decisions at national level. Lee, whose internatlonal career spanned 11 years starting as a 17-year-old in Australia in 1975. withdrew from the singles at last. week’s national championships in Christchurch in protest at

seeding inconsistencies.

She went on to win the women’s doubles title with Hutt Valley’s Sarah Sandley and then led Hamilton to an upset vistory in the women’s teams event with an unbeaten record before announcing her retirement.

Back in Hamilton, where she has lived this year after moving from Auckland with well known table tennis-playing husband Richard, Lee said she had had enough and

had decided to get out while on top.

"The administration has changed over the last couple of years and there is a lot of dissatisfaction among a lot of the top players,” Lee said. “Among the top women there is a lot of dissatisfaction and in fact I think there are a lot of people who are going to stop playing. It’s not just me, it’s right through the women’s section,” she said.
