Positive signals lift Australia

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed sharply higher yesterday in active trade, recovering much of this week's losses on a series of positive signals, from abroad overnight Brokers said a 1U56.20 rise in gold bullion boosted demand for quality mining stocks. Industrials were inspired by firmer closes on Wall Street and in London, solid profit results and lower domestic interest rates. At the close, the all ordinaries index was 21.9 per cent higher at 2206.7 and the all industrials 15.1 up at 3246.6. A rise of 60.8 points took the gold marker to 3957.9 as the all resources climbed 27.1 to 1408.5.

Turnover was heavy as 184.69 million shares worth sAust334.B7M changed hands and rises outnumbered falls by five to three. Heavyweight gold stocks took the lead following the sharp overnight rise in bullion prices.

Twenty cent gains took Renison to 1460, Kidston to 720, Poseidon to 690 and Sons of Gwalia to 1380. BHP Gold climbed 8c to 178 on heavy

turnover of 8.62 M shares worth $14.69M, most in one special sale. Resource stocks enjoyed similar solid rises, with CRA taking centre stage as it climbed 50c to 1070. MIM rose 23c to 368, North Broken Hill 20c to 465 and Peko the same to 870. Western Mining was up by 8c to 990. Among the industrials, interest tended to centre on merchants, transport companies, developers and retailers.

Sir Peter Abeles’ TNT jumped 16c to 660, taking its gain for the week to 36c, as rival transporter Brambles gained 15c to 1135. Elsewhere, Elders IXL also advanced 16c to 566 in continued demand.

The retail sub-index rose 0.9 per cent or 24.5 points to 2664.4, as a 12c rise took Coles Myer to 902 and David Jones went up 20c to 1270. Elsewhere in the sector, Woolworths dropped 5c to 340.

Lend Lease gained 40c to 1720 after recent sharp falls.

News Corp rose 20c to 2300 and Boral 16c to 640 as Adsteam slumped 10c to 1060.
