Out on the gritty streets
Suapecta. By William J. Caunitz. Century Huthinson, 1987. 374 pp. $39.99. Caunitz is a retired New York detective with 30 years’ service behind him. He has written one excellent thriller already — “Onq Police Plaza.” “Suspects” has the same sharp, seedy smell of New York streets as Tony Scanlon, the far-from-super-sleuth of the Ninety-Third Precinct, lurches through a double murder inquiry where one of the victims was a fellow policeman. The gritty style invites comparison with the writings of Ed Mcßain and Joseph Wambaugh. Caunitz provides hearty, beery laughter amid violence and moral dilemmas that are sometimes too much for his all-too-fallible policemen.
