Monitors

Sir,—ln your article on cot deaths (September 7), Professor Shannon says apnoea monitors do not prevent them and that Christchurch should have only one monitor, Mrs Robinson, of the Cot Death Society, comments that if Christchurch had the necessary equipment and assessment babies could go home without a monitor. These remarks are misleading. Like all alarms, while they do not prevent events, when used properly they give an early alert of an emergency and action can be taken. If they do not help prevent cot deaths, do we need even one? As the cause of cot deaths is unknown, assessment alone will not prevent them. It may identify “at risk” babies, but does not avoid the need for monitors. Criteria currently exist to Identify "at risk’’’ babies who do go home with monitors. Current medical knowledge can not cure “at risk” babies. Certainly we are grateful to have monitors for our premature twins.—Yours, etc., JANE and lAN HOGG. September 8, 1987.
