Two high country stations

In a push for profitability many farms today have been transformed to squeeze maximum production out of the land. But still there are farmers who prefer the old way and the more relaxed lifestyle that goes with it This week . "Country Calendar*’ compares two .South Island high country stations — one run the old way, the other the new.

Brian Beattie owns the 14,000-hectare Dry Creek Station, near Fairlie in South Canterbury. For 20 years he has stuck determinedly to tradition, running merinos and relying largely on wool tor his income.

His neighbour, Andrew Orbell, runs the slightly smaller Clayton Station and has adopted intensive practices, diversifying every way he can. “Country Calendar” talks to both men, looks at what they’ve done ... and asks the question, "Who’s better off?"

“Country Calendar” screens tomorrow (Sunday) at 6.5 p.m. on One.
