Plans to salvage old submarine
NZPA-AP London The Royal Navy Submarine Museum says it hopes to salvage Britain’s first mechanically powered submarine, which is believed to have been found 107 years after it sank off north Wales.
Resurgam — Latin for “I shall rise again” — was unmanned when it went down in 1880 after a cable broke as it was being towed into Rhyl Harbour for repairs caused by a storm. It was built at Birkenhead, Liverpool, in 1879.
The 14-metre vessel was designed by the Rev. George William Garrett. It was driven by a coalfired boiler which was stoked before the vessel submerged.
