Maori-language appointment
PA Hamilton Waikato University’s Professor Timoti Karetu has been appointed as the foundation professor of Maori language. Professor Karetu is head of the Maori department at the university and has also recently been appointed to chair the new Komihana mo te Reo Maori (Maori Language Commission). A major objective of the commission is to promote Maori as an official and living language. Professor Karetu in-
tends to combine the function of chairman of the commission with his university duties. The Maori department of the university is one of the fastest growing departments on campus, under Professor Karetu’s leadership. The vice-chancellor, Dr Wilf Malcolm, said: “Professor Karetu’s appointment to the newly established chair of Maori language is a tribute to his high standing as a teacher and scholar of the Maori language.”
