Christchurch Squash Rackets Club members had good cause to celebrate well on Sunday evening; four teams from the club had qualified for the national graded teams events in September. The Christchurch club will represent Canterbury in the men’s B, C, E and F grade finals at various venues throughout New Zealand. Lancaster Park will have three club teams in the national finals while Christchurch Football is next-best representated with two. In the men’s B grade district elimination final during the week-end the first three
Christchurch players on the court all overcame their Sumner Club opponents, effectively ending the contest Fred Williams started things well for Christchurch with a 3-1 win over Ron Marshall, Adrian Casey followed with a long, but successful, battle against a typically gritty John Christensen and a dynamic Geoff Cotton clinched the final place by beating Tristan Franklin in yet another 3-1 scoreline. The Christchurch men’s C grade team began the weekend poorly with a 2-3 loss to Lancaster Park on Friday night but went on to win its
other three matches while Park lost twice.
