Aust, sharply higher

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed sharply higher in record territory yesterday as escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf and subsequent bullion price rises fuelled demand for gold-related and resource stocks. Brokers said a sharp rise in bullion to 5U5471.25/472.25 an ounce in Hong Kong yesterday from $U5462.10/60 last Friday saw mining issues take centre stage, with industrials turning in a lacklustre performance. Turnover was very heavy as 189.20 million shares worth sAust3Bl.o2M changed hands. Rises outnumbered falls by about five to three. Heavyweight miners led the charge, many posting significant gains. CRA jumped 60c to 1100, Niugini Mining advanced 50c to 1600 and Western Mining 42c to 960. However, uncertainty over BHP’s position following the recent Elders-AFP play saw it drop 10 to 1015. CSR also fell to 384 following industrial trouble in the Hunter Valley. Gold shares to rise included Metana, up 100 c to 1550 and Poseidon, up 60c'to 700. Newmont moved ahead 35c to 395 and Kidston 20 to 870.

Oil and gas stocks were also keenly sought, with the sub-index gaining 32.8 points,

or 3.3 per cent, on fears of escalating tensions in the Middle East. Santos rose 30c to 750, as 15c gains took Bridge and Oilsearch to 195. Interest in the industrial sector was subdued, with only selected blue chip stocks attracting attention. Comalco rose 20c to 480 and a 10c gain took lEL to 540.
