Favourites won six of last 20 Grand Nationals
Win favourites have won six of the last 20 Grand National Steeplechases, and five such victories have come in the last decade. Crown Star was favourite for his 1985 and 1986 victories, extending the trend established earlier by those other North Islanders, Thun (1976), Chumson (1976), Guess Who (1979) and Grey Warbler (1982). In the same period, favourites have won four Winter Cups. The last one
was the Awapuni-trained London Trader, seven years ago. The major Winter Cup upset in the last 20 years came in the 1977 renewal, when the veteran South-land-trained diamond Pal triumphed at odds of close to 100 to 1. Noble River (1983), the last South Island-trained winner, was at odds of close to 20 to one. Winners and favourites for the Grand Natinonal in the last 20 years are listed below:
