Pavement testing

Sir,—Congratulations to lan Wood and Associates for the A.C.E.N.Z. award, for a top state-of-the-art design (July 27). However, the statement made in the article, and also earlier (December 16,1986), that the design is a first of its kind for Australasia, is incorrect The original Univer-, sity of Canterbury pavement testing track and vehicle, similar in concept, was completed in 1969 at Harewood. It was designed and built as a university project headed by the National Roads Board 1968 post-graduate scholar, who used research work based on it to present his thesis for his Ph.D. Financial contribution from the N.R.B. was supplemented by professional, technical and material assistance from the university, M.W.D. and local companies. Dr W. D. Paterson has since become a recognised world authority on the analysis and management of stress on pavements. The original track and vehicle, often modified, has been in frequent use for technical testing and experimentation. — Yours, etc., C. L. PATERSON. July 29, 1987.
