Sir,—N. H. Lindo (July 23) would do well to devote his literary energy to more worthwhile causes. "In a man’s letters,” wrote Samuel Johnson, "his soul lies naked.” Mr Lindo has exposed his inability both to adapt to local conditions & also to judge what of our literary heritage is worthy of protection. The apostrophe is not an endangered species. I commend to him as a cause more worthy of his espousal the preservation of the ampersand, that efficient and beautiful device which is seen only too rarely upon the written or printed page. History is full of examples of crises solved by the use of the ampersand (would Sir Francis Drake, for instance, have been able to finish his game of bowls had his fleet orders not made use of the device?), & I urge Mr Lindo to redirect his sympathies.—Yours, etc., DAVID J. ELLISON. August 1, 1987.
