Submariners washed overboard

NZPA-AAP Sydney A search for two young sailors lost overboard when a submarine dived oft Sydney’s South Head yesterday was to continue throughout last night. The Royal Australian Navy’s fleet submarine operations officer, Commander Kim Pitt, said the H.M.A.S. Otama had dived about 10.40 a.m. while two junior submariners from interstate were working in the fin.

The fin, or conning tower, was a metal casing which housed periscopes and other equipment, and was open to the sea, Commander Pitt said. The sailors’ absence was noticed about 75 minutes after the Otama submerged, on its way to exercises off the New South Wales coast It surfaced five minutes later and began a search, which at one time involved more than 1000 personnel.
