Trade adviser dies in U.S.

NZPA-Reuter Washington President Reagan has lost one of his key economic and trade policy advisers with the death of Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige, a sevenyear veteran of the White House Cabinet.

Mr Baldrige, aged 64, whose horse fell on him during a rodeo at a private ranch, died of an apparent heart attack at a Walnut Creek, California, hospital.

“The nation has suffered a great loss with the untimely death of Malcolm’ Baldrige,” President Reagan said in a statement issued by the White House.

“An experienced businessman and respected community leader, he was a tainted and dedicated

public servant who sought nothing more than to make a contribution to America. And Indeed he did.

“Under his stewardship, the Department of Commerce played a key role in the rebirth of our country’s prosperity and all of us owe a great debt to Mac Baldrige.” Mr Baldrige was a talented rodeo rider who had won many awards in the sport. Ironically, a year ago he sprained a finger in a steer-roping contest, but shrugged off the injury by saying: “It’s the year of the older athlete.”

Mr Baldrige was an original member of Mr Reagan’s Cabinet, taking office with President Reagan in Januaryjl9Bl.
