Better news for Nats

The latest “New Zealand Her-ald”-Natlonal Research Bureau political poll has some promising news for National. -

It shows Labour’s lead among committed voters is only 11.7 per cent — far smaller, than the record 18 per cent-advantage held by Labour in the previous poll in mid-June. The latest poll was taken between July 15 and 17 — just after the consumers’ price Index revealed record inflation. It was taken also on a new “all electorate” basis, making it more representative than other surveys. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, has said he expected that the gap between the two main parties would narrow to about 10 per cent before the August 15 election. '

The latest poll suggests that Labour will pick up more than National of the 20 per cent uncommitted voters.

It shows also that Labour’s economic policies are twice as appealing as National’s.
