Royal burial in Jerusalem

NZPA-Reuter London The Queen’s mother-in-law, Princess Andrew of Greece, will be buried in Jerusalem 18 years after her death, says a Buckingham Palace spokesman.

“It was her wish that she should be buried near her aunt, also a nun, Sister Elizabeth,” the spokesman said.

Prince Philip’s mother, known as Princess Andrew although her name was Alice, died in

1969, aged 84. She was a nun in the last 20 years of her life. Prince Philip’s father was Prince Andrew of Greece.

“Difficulties arose because Sister Elizabeth was a nun in the White Russian Orthodox Church, which is a breakaway of the Greek Orthodox Church to which Princess Andrew belonged,” the spokesman said. There were also political difficulties because of

the site, which lies just east of Jerusalem, disputed territory that Britain does not recognise as part of Israel. Negotiations were almost complete but the transfer of the remains from St George’s Chapel, Windsor, would not take place until the end of the year, said the spokesman. It was too early to say whether any member of the Royal Family would attend the ceremony.
