Few farms in ‘good’ position

Only 11 per cent of New Zealand farmers described their 1986-87 budget situation as good in a recent survey carried out by John Pryde and Patrick McCartin of the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit at Lincoln College. The survey sought the opinions of farmers throughout New Zealand on a wide range of issues including how respondents would describe their 198687 budgets. Sixty-six per cent of respondents gave their budget situation a fair rating while 23 per cent rated their situation as bad.

Three-quarters of the older farmers (over 60) gave their budgets a fair rating, only 8 per cent of these farmers rating their budgets good. Forty one per cent of East Coast respondents indicated that their budget situation could be described as bad, no farmers from Westland believed their budget situation was better than fair. Marlborough and Southland farmers gave the brightest pictures with 21 and 17 per cent respectively giving good ratings.
