New radar on trial
A sophisticated New Ministry of Transport radar detector might come to Christchurch for part of its trial. The traffic superintendent for the Christchurch metropolitan area, Mr lan McLachlan, said he hoped the $5OOO Hawk moving radar would spend some time on trial in the Christchurch area. One has been brought into New Zealand pending a Government decision to
buy more from the American supplier. The unit would be based in Wellington at present but was likely to be moved about New Zealand to give other Ministry staff a chance to use it. The Under Secretary for Transport, Mr Jeffries, said he believed the units would pay for themselves fairly quickly, with a likely dramatic increase .in catching speeding drivers.
