Koreans told will be paid
PA Wellington South Korean fishermen stranded unpaid in Wellington for two months will receive wages on returning home, said a New Zealand representative of their boats’ owner yesterday. Korean law made wages first priority for debt settlement when a company had financial difficulties, said the agent for two of the four Korean squid boats tied up at Wellington since May 30, Mr Michael Park.
Sam Wah, the Korean company which owns Sam Seung 35 and 36, Dong Chang 3 and Korei 163, got into financial trouble after sending the boats to New Zealand on an abortive squid mission in April. The company’s New Zealand agent has detained the boats to have some security on the money owed. Some crew from the two Sam Seung boats have already flown home. Most of the remaining 41 cr£w hav®never been paid.®
