Wool eases at Wellington

PA Wellington Wool prices eased slightly in the face of a stronger New Zealand dollar at the Wellington sale, the first of the season, said the Wool Board. The market indicator fell 3c from the end of the last season to 579 c a kilogram clean. The board said the offering of 19,900 bales of all North Island wools was mostly crossbred secondshear and crutching types and oddments.

Prices generally showed little movement compared with the last sale of the 1986-87 season at Christchurch on June 26.

Movements included second-shear and hogget which were slightly cheaper. Good colour fleece was unchanged with average colour being slightly cheaper.

Clothing oddments gained 2.5 per cent. Average colour crutchings were firm to slightly cheaper, with poorer colour being 2.5 to 5 per cent dearer.

The board bid on 25.7 per cent and bought or had passed to it 1239

bales or 6.7 per cent of the offering. Competition improved markedly during the day. The main buyers were merchant scourers, Eastern Europe and China.

From today, wool sale prices will be given in a new format. The new format would be more comprehensive and more objective than the information formerly supplied by brokers, the board said. Official prices are:
