Daria’s Fun ready for a bold run

Special correspondent Auckland Daria’s Fun, after three sprints which she has run so creditably, promises to be

in the right trim for a bold attempt on the Taumarunui Cup at the Taumarunui Hunt Club’s meeting at Te Rapa tomorrow. „ x Worth $40,000, all up, and $25,000 to the winner, the Taumarunui cup is the last of the winter’s big middle-distance handicaps. It follows that the field has much talent. Several runners are from the Central Districts of the North Island with good recent form. Angel Eyes, having won Trentham’s Parliamentary Handicap and Winter Oats in her two latest attempts, and a middle-distance double at Awapuni in June, will be particularly interesting. The last time Daria’s Fun raced any further than a sprint was when she finished seventh in the D.B. Auckland Cup and that was after finishing third in the 2400 metres Queen Elizabeth Handicap. Quite clearly Daria’s Fun, at best, is easily able to manage 2050 m, which she has to go tomorrow and she seems just as capable on soft tracks as she is on top of the ground. This will be her fourth race since she came back from a let-up after a win over 1400 m at Avondale and third placings over 1200 m at Avondale and Matamata.

Besides Angel Eyes, from Foxton, the runners from the Central Districts will

include Gatcombe’s Pride, Exocet, Kelly Boy and Sophie’s Secret, all due attention, and perhaps Timandra Bay though there would need to be four scratchings for him to get a start. Since so impressing Ellerslie racegoers with his win in the Fay, Richwhite Cornwall, Gatcombe’s Pride has had three starts, failing to win but running well all the same, last time for second in a 1600 m at Awapuni on July 18. With his unusual ability in heavy ground Gatcombe’s Pride always needs to be respected. His 57kg is the topweight but it gives him a good chance, nevertheless.

Anything other than a good race from Joai would be unusual. She is wonderfully consistent and, even if she did not have much to beat, scored a good win over 2030 m at Matamata a fortnight ago. The luck of the running went against Old Nick in the Te Awamutu Cup last Saturday, otherwise he might have won. He was forced very wide when improving from the 600 m. Balrani, which won the Te Awamutu race gamely, and two other lightweights, March Sea and Tommy’s Mate, are well capable of going well. Tommy’s Mate usually takes a while to work up speed but he can turn on a great finish. •

Sophie’s Secret would be in the list of prospects if only because she is trained by Noel Eales, who seldom comes north from Awapuni without the right material. She is- in good form, as well, a very genuine customer, it seems, and thoroughly adept on soft tracks.
