Town Hall organ

Sir,—Although an organ enthusiast, I believe that Helen Garrett’s ideas for a resurgence of enthusiasm towards organ music are pipe-dreams. Regular evenings of Bach and Buxtehude just are not going to be packing them in at the Town Hall. Saddening as it is, this is the reality we have to live with. The’ Town Hall manager, Mr R. Sleeman, is perfectly correct in questioning the morality of spending $750,000 on a new concert organ that will be given “minimal use.” Organ enthusiasts, who do form a minority intent, should not ex-

pect the city to spend so much on their particular musical art form. Too many already existing organs in the city - t are grossly under-used. Apart fromchurchsited instruments, of which there ( are many, what about the large pipe organ at the State Trinity Centre? What, too, of the plans of the Canterbury Theatre Organ Society to import and install yet another pipe organ in the' , city? Where is the rationale? This, is Christchurch, not Sydney, New York or London. — Yours, etc.; STEPHEN H. RICE. July 20, 1987.
