Reported sightings of Mr Ayres mistaken

Mr Harry Ayres, the former Christchurch mountaineer who has been missing since last Thursday, is not believed to have been at Governor’s Bay as earlier reported. There were a number of sightings of an elderly man with a green backpack in the area on Thursday but the police say it was not Mr Ayres. A spokesman for the Lyttelton police said another elderly man who was tramping in the area on Thursday had approached the police concerned that he had been mistaken for Mr Ayres. It was confirmed that a

mistake was made after there was a second positive sighting of Mr Ayres at Lyttelton on Thursday afternoon. Mr Ayres, aged 74, is believed to have been at the Deluxe Cafe in London Street at 3.30 p.m. A staff member said Mr Ayres had seemed happy and had talked about climbing with Sir Edmund Hillary and the memories he had of Lyttelton. The police said they had had a tremendous response from the public regarding Mr Ayres’ disappearance but there had not been any other positive sighting.
