Minister’s move a ‘panic measure’

The announcement of 50 more police by the Government has been dubbed by the Opposition spokesman on police, Mr Don McKinnon, as a panic measure. “It is a token effort to placate the electorate,” said Mr McKinnon in Christchurch last evening. “This is obviously a measure of panic by the Minister of Police. For some time now she has been saying that no more police are required and that the number increases in the Budget were ade-

quate. “The Police Association has consistently said they need more. Mrs Hercus is obviously finally responding to both public demand and police pressure but it is still not enough. “This is just playing with the New Zealand public in light of the election coming up.” Mr McKinnon said a National Government would meet all reasonable requests by the police for more staff. “We certainly are looking at a considerable increase.”
