Man admits setting fire to arcade
PA Auckland A Papatoetoe man aged 20, who admitted setting fire to the Century Arcade in Auckland was committed to a psychiatric hospital. Eight of the 20 shops in the arcade were extensively damaged by the May 30 fire which was fought by 60 firemen. The man, who appeared in the District Court at Auckland, admitted setting fire to the arcade, and attempting to set fire to the Link Building at Wellington Hospital. After convicting the man, Judge Rushton ordered that he be detained in a psychiatric hospital. She also suppressed his name. Two doctors had certified that the man had a mental disorder.
