Stolen cigarettes to be returned by police
Two cartons of cigarettes stolen by a shoplifter will probably be returned to a Nelson supermarket after all.
In the District Court at Nelson on Tuesday, Judge Seeman declined to grant an order for the return of the cartons because he said cigarettes were harmful.
However, a police spokesman said yesterday that goods recovered from shoplifters were generally returned to stores by the police, unless the offenders had lodged a legal claim for the goods. The Judge’s refusal to
make the order did not necessarily mean the cigarettes would not be returned, the police spokesman said. An order was made for the return of other items stolen from the Courtney’s New World supermarket. Judge Seeman told the offender, a Nelson housewife, aged 25, that cigarette smoking was harmful to her and her two young children. He suggested that if she had financial problems, as stated in Court she should give up smoking and use the money saved to buy more necessary items.
