Record average price for Angus bulls
A strong inquiry from commercial beef farmers was a feature this week of the national Angus bull sale at Palmerston North which returned a record average price of $8229 for 33 bulls. Commercial farmers, who bought 50 per cent of the offering, paid up to about $BOOO for bulls. The top price of $35,000 (the highest in 67 years of the national sale) was paid by a syndicate of four North Island stud breeders for a bull bred by Merchiston Estates, of Rata, Manawatu.
Among South Island purchasers were S. L. and B. E. Chambers, Southbridge, who paid $14,000 for a bull from Te Mania Stud, Parnassus, and G. L. Duncan, Otago, who paid the third highest price of $26,000. Te Mania sold a second bull at $17,000 and Kakahu Stud, Geraldine, had one sale list $6OOO. Only one failed to reach its reserve price.
