More funding to sport possible
PA Wellington Lotto would make increased funding to sport and recreation possible, said the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Mr Moore. He was reacting to comments by the executive chairman of the New Zealand Sports Foundation, Mr Graham Davy, who claimed the amount of funding sport would
receive from the Lottery Board this year would be smaller than last year. Mr Moore said Internal Affairs figures showed that so far this year $6.6 million had been allocated to sport and recreation. In the 1986-87 year the total was $6.1 million. The Lottery Board had already allocated $500,000 to the Hillary Commission
and $1 million to the 1990 Commonwealth Games, he said. "Funding from Lotto should see the contribution to sport and recreation increase further.” Lotto was projected to draw $lOO million in revenue, which would eventually help boost "New Zealand’s sporting life."
