University debaters
“That David Lange should be canonised” is one of the topics that the New Zealand universities debating team will contest at three Christchurch schools this week. The university team (above, from left) is Jane Falconer and Andrew Stockley, both of Victoria University of Wellington, and Rachel Hayward, the team captain, of the University of Canterbury. The University team will debate against a pro-
vincial team at Christchurch Girl’s High, Riccarton High, and Shirley Boys’ High schools. Other topics include “That most games are not cricket” and “That we are the people our parents warned us about” The aim of the New Zealand tour is to pro-
mote debating and public speaking among secondary school pupils, and to encourage them to continue at university. The University team recently won the New Zealand debating championship. The tour is sponsored by the National Bank of New Zealand.
