Independent rugby selections
Andrew Langley, the Christchurch flanker who has been chosen as captain of the New Zealand under-19 rugby team, is only a reserve in the Canterbury side in the same age group. And Edward Sparrow, the St Bede’s first XV wing who is still eligible for under-18 selection, has won a place in the Cantebury Colts squad (under-21) but is only a reserve for the under-19s. Langley, too, is in the colts squad. These are features of the Canterbury under-19 team to play its Queensland counterpart at Lancaster Park tomorrow and the provincial colts squad to prepare for important inter-union games. Mr Roger Lough, selector for the under-19s, has preferred two Old Boys flankers, Hamish Owen and Gerard Williams, to Langley in his first line-up. On the right wing he has plumped for a young Southbrook player, Shane Walker, ahead of Sparrow. The colts squad, chosen by Vance Stewart, is: A. Simcock, G. Hall, P. Treves, D. Seymour (captain), N.
