Luxury resort starts in Suva

NZPA Suva The owner of New Zealand’s Huka Lodge, Mr Alex van Heeren, is going ahead with an island resort in Fiji in spite of the hardship caused by the May 14 coup. The new resort, being

planned as a tourist hideaway, is on Dolphin Island, off Rakiraki, in northern Viti Levu. Work is reported to be well under way on 10 first-class “bures” (Fijian cottages) to accommodate a maximum of 20 guests. Dolphin Island Resort is

due to open early next year. Mr Jack Ferguson, who is in charge of construction work, said that the resort would be upmarket and exclusive. No further development would be done after the opening in order to keep

the resort uncrowded and to protect the island’s natural environment. Mr Ferguson said that the island was originally planned as a hideaway for Mr van Heeren “but afterwards it wag decided to let others share the beauty of the island.”
